Big Walk Completed

The two final sections of the Big Walk, from Scotland’s Cape Wrath (most northerly point of Britain) to Land’s End, have been completed (see, left, the Gang), bringing to an end this delightful odyssey started in September 2008.  The distance walked in seven separate sections was 955.5 miles; over 50 people participated (some heroes on multiple occasions – please see gallery and Updates for all names); and over £30,000 was raised in cash with a further £20,000 in grant funding.  Immersion in the stunning beauty and apparent emptiness of Britain was just one of the benefits: hiking across the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland, following the Pennine Way, passing through Manchester and on down the Offa’s Dyke on the Welsh Border to Bristol, and finally heading west through Somerset and Dorset to the coast path in Cornwall.  Such an effort was made by so many, with fatigue and sore feet and drenchings of rain and storm.  But these were balanced always with tremendous good cheer and company, clear, beautiful days, good pubs and grub and the knowledge that it was all for a very good cause.  A great way to raise funds.  A great way to see and experience true countryside.  A great way to be amongst friends and new acquaintances.  And a great way to gently challenge yourself.  Long live Rainbow sponsored walks!  And well done all for sticking it through the foul as well as the fine.
